Burano

This charming island was once a fishing village. A mini-Venice with its own tiny canals, Burano has brightly colored houses so that men away on long fishing trips would spot their home on their return trip. The women, idle without their husbands, made lace, earning Burano a reputation for exquisite handmade lace. Hankerchiefs, shawls, bridal veils and curtains can be purchased, depending on the amount of lire in one's pocket. A charming regional sparkling wine, prosecco, is a delicious lunchtime treat, though too much prosecco may require a nap before an evening out.
