Verona

Famous as the setting for Shakespeare's most romantic tragedy, this lovely northern Italian town lives off its history for tourists, and modern shopping for Italians. It's just far enough removed from the bustle of modern Milan as to make a pleasant afternoon trip. It's clean, modern and expensive. Verona has many refences to both the Capulets and Montagues - though stories vary of how true to life Shakespeare's play was - and one of its most famous onetime residents: Dante. A tower provides a pretty view of the hilly town, and its ancient arena, built around the same time as its larger famous relative in Rome, but better preserved. It still hosts concerts today.

The garden holding the reputed "Juliet's balcony" with the bronze statue is regrettably covered with romantic graffiti. But the town still makes a pleasant afternoon stop.
