San Gimignano has been nicknamed "The Manhattan of Tuscany" for its 13 medieval
towers still standing. It's at the top of a hill, and the long walk up can make
one appreciate the wisdom of the position for defensive purposes. The hills and
undulating, skinny streets result in stunning views of the surrounding
countryside. The stone walls of the city bear tiny shops selling the wares of
the countryside: fine foods and wine. An large medieval cistern stands at the
center as a landmark for this living relic.
