Siena has a modern, ground level portion, and a rewarding hilltop medieval
presence with a goregeous cathedral and sweeping Piazza del Campo, a fan-shaped
plaza extending from the staggering clock tower, surrounded - like any Italian
tourist attraction - by souvenir stands and gift shops. Siena still participates
in the medieval horse race Palio, which pits the various neighborhoods in the
city against each other as they rally around their mascots. |
